Dales Pony Conservancy North America (DPCNA) est. 2015
DPCNA is a grassroots organization formed from the community of Dales Pony enthusiasts in North America. Our board is exclusively staffed by volunteers, so please join us as we expand regionally and nationally to embrace Dales fans across our vast continent. We hope for a future where knowledge and education along with sensible breeding and good fun, help us to support the traditional Dales pony on our side of the pond. We are a collaborative organization welcoming all hands to help.
What can you offer? What is your passion with these ponies? What are your skills with organizing? Ready to join a regional group? Contribute to our newsletter? Host a Fun Day? Share an experience? Let us know!
DPCNA aims to support the Dales Pony population by:
- educating the North American community about the Dales Pony;
- sharing the Dales Pony with the world through social media and exhibiting;
- supporting registration of ponies with the Dales Pony Society in the United Kingdom; and
- supporting breeders who focus on maintaining the Dales Pony as the ‘Great Allrounder’ by breeding easy keeping, hearty, kind, intelligent and versatile ponies who can put a hoof to all endeavors, but is to each of us, a being of great heart and depth.
-maintaining an unofficial consistently updated database of Dales Ponies in North America which we regularly share with DPS to help the mother registry accuracy.
-providing a network of 'safe homes' for Dales Ponies whose owners are unable to care for them, and assisting in rehoming efforts where needed, which allow these ponies to be owner transferred with DPS and not be 'lost' to the breed.
We have been instrumental, in concert with our DPCNA /DPS- liason secretary, in supporting many new Dales owners in registering these critically endangered ponies with the mother UK Dales Pony Society (DPS) registry. The DPS registry keeps an available and interactive database of Dales ponies going back well over a century, which documents ‘lost’ ponies on our continent. Registering these ponies has an enormous impact on increasing our very small breed numbers here.
We have a lovely track record of participating at equine showcase events and regional rare breed shows. We are eager to expand on that via our regional board of breed enthusiasts who have stepped up to organize, as well as supporting them by creating ‘how to’ guides and materials subsidized by DPCNA.
Our growing FaceBook Dales Pony North America discussion community (over 900!) has rescued ponies, sponsored clinics, shows, events and kicked up our heels at fun days. Focusing on 'getting the ponies out there' and sharing that fun, has welcomed many new Dales fans. We post official conservancy announcements on our DPCNA Facebook page, like and follow us there!
Our Affiliates
Equus Survival Trust (EST) – an educational non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the traditional traits and the genetic diversity and purity of historical equine breeds (horses, ponies and donkeys) threatened with extinction.
As an EQUUS Survival Trust affiliate we can accept grants and donations made directly through EST as a non-profit for your tax savings. We are working with Equine Survival Trust (EST) to create and host an interactive database identifying all the ponies we are aware of in North America, lost and found.
Our Patron, Denny Emerson – We are honored to have Denny Emerson the great Olympian, trainer, author, and Dales fan as our DPCNA Patron. In 2000, The Chronicle of the Horse voted Mr. Emerson One of the 50 most influential horsemen of the Twentieth Century. Mr. Emerson has leant his support to our goals of building a collaborative North American Dales Pony organization to protect, educate and enjoy our wonderful great allrounders.
