Dales Pony Safe Harbor

Safe Harbor is a network of Dales Pony enthusiasts located throughout North America, working together to help Dales Ponies and their people in times of need, with the goal of no more Dales Pony lost to the parent Registry (Dales Pony Society in the UK).

Safe Harbor offers the following assistance:

  • Nonjudgmental, compassionate help, support and listening ears
  • Mentoring for people who request assistance, including but not limited to:
    • Advice if your Dales is overweight or underweight
    • Behavior or training questions
    • Health concerns related to your Dales Pony
    • General horse keeping advice
  • “Homeward Bound” program for breeders & owners to register as a permanent back up if any of their ponies are in need of a home in the future.
  • Emergency, short-term assistance with feed needs (not to exceed 30 days)
  • Emergency transport, housing and care for Ponies due to situations such as severe weather, fire, loss of home, loss of job, owner’s health, etc.  This could be:
    • Temporary / short-term arrangements (up to 90 days)
    • Long term arrangements with a legal lease agreement to ensure Pony will be returned (90 days to 1 year, to be re-issued at a minimum of annually if needed)
    • Permanent placement to ensure a permanent, safe home (passport transfers with  Pony)
  • Assistance in locating veterinary, equine dental, and farrier resources
  • Assistance in developing a will or trust to ensure your Dales Ponies are properly rehomed (with registration / passport accompanying them) in the event of your death or legal incapacitation
  • Assistance in developing a preparedness plan for emergencies (evacuation, fire, etc)
  • Emergency transport and housing to prevent the loss of a Dales Pony to auction
  • In the event a Dales Pony is listed in an auction, attempt to purchase said Pony and work with seller to get passport
  • Emergency assistance in responding to Animal Control involvement
  • Emergency assistance in responding to non-government organization / rescue involvement

What Safe Harbor is not:

  • We are not a rescue.  We are fellow Dales lovers who are here to help and support
  • We do not have the authority to remove Ponies from any situation without the legal owner’s full cooperation and agreement
  • We are not a ‘go-fund-me’ for vet or farrier costs
  • This is NOT a way for a person to get a Dales Pony for free or little cost
